the opposition will elect a single presidential candidate in primaries

“The united struggle has as its fundamental objective to achieve political change, understanding that it is the only true way to stop the suffering of millions of Venezuelans,” says a statement from the Unitary Platformwhich brings together the main opposition parties.

“The presidential candidate of the democratic forces will be chosen by a broad and plural primary process that will take place in the year 2023,” the text added. “As of this moment, we will begin a deep consultation process with the entire country in order to jointly build this powerful mechanism for the selection of the single candidate.”

Elections for president in Venezuela are scheduled for 2024six years after the re-election of Nicholas Maduro in 2018, in a process that the opposition itself and dozens of Western countries, led by USA and the European Unionthey did not recognize and branded as fraudulent.

That ignorance was in fact the argument for the opposition leader Juan Guaido self-proclaimed himself in 2019, in his capacity as head of the National Assembly (parliament), as interim president with wide international recognition, although in practice power always resided with Maduro.

The electoral authority -which after a reform has opposition representation in its directory, but is still controlled by Chavismo- has not announced a schedule for the next elections.

The main opposition parties already participated in the regional elections last year, without express support from Guaidó, after boycotting the 2018 presidential and 2020 parliamentary elections, denouncing a lack of conditions.

Guaidó “does not rule out” being one of the candidates in the primary process, according to a source. Maduro should in principle seek a third term in 2024.
