Before the National Council: the SPÖ’s application for a new election

This decision was “not taken lightly,” said deputy club boss Jörg Leichtfried in a press conference on Tuesday: “But at some point it’s time to say it can’t go any further, they can’t bring it together.”

The turquoise-green government is not making any progress either with the currently urgent problems such as the massive impact of inflation or the pandemic, “which is far from over”, nor with future tasks such as care reform or energy change. Instead of solving the crises, they amplify turquoise-green. “We have the highest inflation in 41 years,” said Leichtfried. A third of people have to limit themselves when buying groceries because of this.

There is also “no concrete plan” for the conversion to renewable energies. The government has been guilty of the climate protection law for 500 days, criticized the red vice club boss. And when it came to the important issue of care, a “reform” was recently presented. But if you look behind the “show”, you can see that 24-hour care has been forgotten and that the care grant is only supposed to come in autumn 2023. The SPÖ will therefore submit its own application, according to which the nursing grant should start in the fall and the increase in the nursing allowance should be brought forward.

According to Leichtfried, the resolutions on gas storage planned for the coming plenary session, some of which require a constitutional majority, are still being negotiated. With the Energy Control Act “it looks pretty good” that the SPÖ will give its approval for the necessary two-thirds majority. There are still details to be clarified in the amendment of the Gas Industry Act. But they are “of good will,” said Leichtfried: “But it depends on the negotiations.”
