“We hope to be able to save our boys, because Ukraine needs living heroes, and I believe that every sensible person will understand these words,” the president told the Ukrinform agency.
The women, children and elderly who had taken refuge in the place were evacuated at the end of April, thanks to an operation coordinated by the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
Mariupol has been completely devastated since the Russian offensive against Ukraine that began on February 24.
Russia seized Mariupol, located on the Sea of Azov, last month after besieging and shelling it for a month and a half.
