Culture enthusiasts from Steyr have been waiting for this Saturday since the end of the state exhibition: the new Steyr City Museum in the Innerberger Stadel will open its doors to visitors again on this day. At 10 a.m. Mayor Markus Vogl and City Councilor Katrin Auer (both SP) invite numerous guests of honor to the ceremony, which will be musically performed by the Gleink band.
“We are proud of this beautiful building and one of the most modern city museums in Austria. I am delighted that the history of our city can be conveyed in this contemporary and attractive way,” says Vogl. For Auer, city councilor for cultural affairs, the museum should become an attraction for school classes, tour groups and families: “This will make the city’s cultural offerings even more varied.”
Young acting talent
There will be celebrations all day long – with public tours, excerpts from the Steyr nativity scene programme, concerts and culinary delights by Christoph Schobesberger and drinks from the “Ins Neutor” café on the Grünmarkt. As a highlight, young acting talents from the Steyr State Music School slip into historical costumes. They really bring the museum to life and will offer many a surprise. Visitors can look over the shoulder of a blacksmith in the historic smithy and be accompanied by Countess Katharina von Lamberg on a costumed tour of the exhibition. All program items and the visit to the museum are free of charge for all visitors on this day.
The exhibition in the Steyr City Museum was supplemented by curator Herta Neiß with exciting topics from the history of the city of Steyr and shows the history of the bourgeoisie and the importance of the iron trade for Steyr. The space above the Neutor was redesigned. In it, visitors can learn more about the Lamberg and Werndl families.
“The museum presents a selection of exciting, surprising and contradictory stories that bear witness to Steyr’s eventful past,” explains curator Neiß, who together with Michael John was the scientific director of the state exhibition in Steyr.
The Heimathaus has been in this location for almost 110 years. The building was restored and made barrier-free for the 2021 state exhibition. The extremely successful symbiosis of historical building fabric and contemporary architecture is now intended to attract visitors from all over the world: the Steyr City Museum as a modern meeting and experience space. From May 21, the City Museum will always be open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Town square closed
The entrance and exit to and from the town square will be closed to traffic due to the opening ceremony on Saturday from 9.45 a.m. to 11 a.m., cyclists and pedestrians can pass. Exits via the Ennskai are not possible due to construction work. The police are available for emergencies. The taxi ranks and the public transport stop will be relocated to the foreland and Schönauer bridges during this time.
