The nation is eagerly awaiting whether the musicians around Brian May will repeat their coup from the Golden Jubilee on the 70th anniversary of his accession to the throne. Back in 2002, guitarist May played a rock version of the national anthem “God Save the Queen” from the roof of Buckingham Palace. And now? May has already hinted that something is to be expected. “There was a moment when I wondered where else to go after Buckingham roof,” said the 74-year-old. “Well – you will see!”
Hundreds of thousands of visitors expected
The ‘Platinum Party’, organized by the BBC, is one of several highlights at the 70th Jubilee celebrations in London. From June 2nd to 5th things are happening in the British capital in quick succession: a military parade, a gigantic street party, a memorial service. Hundreds of thousands of visitors are expected, London is gearing up for a rush. The government doesn’t like it at all that Tube employees at two central subway stations are threatening to go on strike – in protest against alleged harassment by superiors.
Elizabeth has been Queen since February 6, 1952, the anniversary of the death of her father, King George VI. On June 2, 1953, she was crowned at the age of 27. The date for the anniversary celebration results from the mixture of the two dates – and the hope for good weather.
Londoners and visitors should only be offered the best and most well-known. This is probably one of the reasons why the BBC announced a list of participants for their party at Buckingham Palace on Thursday night, which sounds like the who’s who of the entertainment industry.
From Alicia Keys to Andrea Bocelli
After Queen with singer Adam Lambert, US singers Alicia Keys and Diana Ross are expected to make their first appearance in Great Britain in 15 years. Funk legend Nile Rodgers, star tenor Andrea Bocelli and Oscar-winning film music producer Hans Zimmer also stand for international glamor. There are also British music stars such as Duran Duran, Craig David and Sam Ryder, who recently came as a strong second in the Eurovision Song Contest.
Three stages, two and a half hours of show, and 3D projections are to be projected onto the facade of the royal residence. Not only 10,000 people who are selected in a public vote are allowed to watch. 7,500 tickets are intended for so-called key workers as well as members of the armed forces, volunteers and employees of charities.
“An incredible, unique event”
The sign: It’s not a festival for the top 10,000, but for all Britons. And they also get to see their favorite sports and entertainment favourites. Ex-soccer player David Beckham is expected, as is US Open winner Emma Raducanu, nature filmmaker David Attenborough and actress Julie Andrews. “We are delighted to bring the nation together for this incredible, once-in-a-lifetime event,” said BBC Executive Charlotte Moore. So that the subjects can really enjoy the celebrations of Her Majesty, there is one more day off for them.
London is supposed to be the center. Festivals are planned in all parts of the country. On a website you can search for celebrations nearby or even register your own plans. For months there have been campaigns across the country to honor the Queen. The palace chose a royal dessert in a competition – a multi-layered lemon and amaretto trifle won. Trees were planted nationwide, motto: “The Green Canopy of the Queen”. In various cities, volunteers decorated mailboxes with self-crocheted crowns and likenesses of queens.
is the queen coming
The only question now is whether the person honored in this way will personally take part in the anniversary weekend. Recently, the Queen’s health has been a cause for concern on several occasions. The monarch canceled several appointments, including those that are otherwise an integral part of her calendar, such as the opening of parliament. But two weeks before the mega festival, the prospects suddenly seem better again. The Queen appeared completely surprisingly for the official opening of a new subway line in London. The name couldn’t be more appropriate: Elizabeth Line.
