The 63-year-old from the Hartberg-Fürstenfeld district was traveling with a passenger on the Westautobahn towards Salzburg on Thursday morning when an overtaking car driver drew his attention to the white smoke that was coming out of the back of the car. The Styrian parked his vehicle in the municipal area of St. Georgen im Attergau (Vöcklabruck district) on the breakdown lane. Flames were already blazing in the lower area of the engine compartment when they got out.
Moments after the two occupants had secured their personal belongings, the car was engulfed in flames. The forces of the St. Georgen and Attersee fire brigades were able to extinguish the fire, but the car was engulfed in flames. The right lane of the A1 was closed for a good one and a half hours to fight the fire and recover the vehicle. However, there was no significant traffic obstruction, the police said in the afternoon.
