The prosecution said on its Twitter account that during simultaneous raid operations in the provinces of Imbabura, Pichincha and El Oro they arrested eight people for the alleged crime of “organized crime, human trafficking and recruitment for guerrilla groups and outside the law”.
The group carried out approaches to communities in the Andean provinces of Cotopaxi and Chimborazo and in the country’s Amazon to recruit them under false pretenses.
“According to the complaints, there are Ecuadorians recruited with the offer of going to follow courses in Argentina and Mexico,” said the entity. “They ended up in the camp of armed groups.”
The objective was “to train them militarily on the Colombian-Venezuelan border”added the prosecution, without giving further details.
Lasso declared a state of emergency in three of the country’s 24 provinces in April and said that he will mobilize some 9,000 members of the public force for greater controls on the streets of the areas considered the most violent.
In recent weeks, violence has increased in Ecuador with car explosions in public spaces and an increase in cases of hired assassins.
