More demand from farm shops

Bread, bacon, milk, eggs or fruit straight from the farm: since the beginning of the corona pandemic, consumers have increasingly bought groceries directly from local farmers. While in 2010 only about every eighth farm sold its own products in a farm shop, by 2022 it will be every fourth – and the trend is rising.

The advantages for consumers: short transport routes, quality and knowledge about the origin of the products. “Knowing what you eat and who produces it is becoming more and more important for people. We advise our customers on site and give tips on how to process the products,” says Johanna Haider, Chair of the Women Farmers’ Committee.

The farmers also benefit from direct marketing, because there is no overproduction due to campaigns like in supermarkets. “This is how we counteract food waste,” says Haider.

The demand for products from farms is even higher than the supply itself. “It’s a question of resources. But for farmers, self-service shops and online shops are here to stay,” says Franz Waldenberger, President of the Chamber of Agriculture.
