Sky du Mont’s real name is Cayetano Claudio Marco Neven du Mont, he was born on May 20, 1947 in the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires. He got his nickname from his brother. Because he always misunderstood the name and always put an “S” in front of the abbreviation Cay – that’s how Sky was created.
His mother is British and comes from the publishing dynasty DuMont, his father is German. After his parents divorced, du Mont went to Great Britain with his mother and grew up there. Later, however, there is a break with the traditions of his youth, he would like to become an actor. His mother rejected this, he once reported in the “Zeit”.
Against the will of the mother
In the end, du Mont ended up in Munich without family support, where he attended drama school from 1969 to 1971 and, according to his own statements, kept his head above water with part-time jobs. The career starts with first engagements at theaters in Berlin and Munich. From the mid-1970s, the very tall du Mont increasingly received roles in film and television. His cinema debut followed in 1976 in the German Heimatfilm “Das Schweigen im Walde”, in the same year he also played a role in the Hollywood film “Boys from Brazil”.
Even before that, however, there is a possibly decisive phase in his career: he is being discussed as a candidate to succeed Sean Connery as “James Bond” in the famous film series, and at about the same time there is a request to take over the “Dracula” role. He rejects “Dracula”, but in the end he is sorted out as “James Bond” because he is still very young. “Now that I’m almost 75, I’m happy about it – I was 23 then and not happy.” The immense fame as “James Bond” would have “perhaps spoiled him a bit” in his early 20s.
Artistically, du Mont was successful in 1999 alongside Nicole Kidman in the Hollywood film “Eyes Wide Shut”, Stanley Kubrick’s last film. He himself calls it “a great moment”. In Germany, however, he remains primarily committed to the role of the arrogant villain in television series. 2001 followed with “Der Schuh des Manitou” again a big screen success.
At times, however, du Mont, who has been married four times and has three children from two marriages, shows that he doesn’t always feel valued. In addition to film and television productions, he works as an author, is now also politically involved and publicly supports the FDP in his adopted home of Hamburg.
For a long time, however, du Mont struggled with aging. It wasn’t until he was about 70 that “one door opened and another closed,” he said recently. He had given up many things, but had “become a lot freer”.
