The President of the Federation of Austrian Industry (IV) in Upper Austria wants to reconsider nuclear power in Austria. In the medium and long term, Axel Greiner wants to find alternatives to Russian gas and oil and an affordable energy transition. This requires a broad mix. In this light, he is also “against bans on thinking”: “It is time to consider nuclear power again,” the industrialist is quoted as saying in the “Kurier” (Friday edition).
At the time, Greiner felt that the decision against nuclear power in Austria was the right one. But Zwentendorf was 44 years ago. Greiner: “And nuclear power has also developed further, and there are now ideas, concepts and approaches for building power plants in such a way that they are safe and do not produce any radioactive residues.”
In Austria there is a nuclear blocking law with constitutional status. It can only be changed with a two-thirds majority. In Europe, for example, Great Britain and France recently announced the construction of new nuclear power plants. The domestic electricity mix also includes nuclear power from abroad, such as the Czech Republic. Austria is driving a strict anti-nuclear course in the EU.
When it comes to the energy mix, the President of the largest IV state organization also has environmentally friendly, domestic shale gas from bio-fracking in mind. It is also about CO2-neutral fuels for combustion engines instead of a new Chinese battery monopoly. According to “Kurier”, Greiner speaks of a modern version of safe nuclear power when it comes to nuclear power. He is “not a fan of conventional nuclear power”.
