Sunak, 42, and his wife Akshata Murty, daughter of the billionaire co-founder of the Indian tech group infosysare worth an estimated 730 million pounds ($910 million), according to the Sunday Times’ annual ranking of the country’s 1,000 richest people, released on Friday.
The couple is ranked 222nd on the listled by brothers Sri and Gopi Hinduja, owners of the Hinduja conglomerate (£28.47bn), inventor James Dyson (£23bn), and entrepreneurs David and Simon Ruben (£22.27bn).
Sunak, until recently considered a favorite among Conservatives to replace the prime minister Boris Johnsonfound himself at the center of a scandal in April that dealt a serious blow to his reputation.
This revolved around the advantageous tax status of his wealthy wife, which allowed him to save millions in taxes, and the US residence permit that the minister had until last year.
Following the revelations, Murty renounced her UK “non-domiciled” status which, although she lives in London, allowed her to avoid paying tax on her foreign income.
Finally exonerated of any breach of the ministerial code of conduct, Sunak remains a target of criticism, accused of not doing enough to help the most disadvantaged households in the face of runaway inflation, of 9% in April, a record in 40 years.
This week, the minister warned that the British face “difficult” months and stressed that the government cannot “completely protect the people” from the international economic environment.
