The number of new infections was just below the average of the past seven days with 3,361 new infections per day. On Friday of the previous week there were 4,555 new infections. The seven-day incidence continues to decline and was 262 cases per 100,000 population.
That left 49,526 active cases on Friday, down 1,511 from Thursday. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 4,228,908 new corona infections have been registered in Austria. 4,161,049 patients have since been reported as recovered. Within the past 24 hours, 4,740 infected people have been reported as healthy again.
The effective number of reproductions fell slightly compared to the previous week (0.93) and was 0.87 on Friday, below the critical one, according to the update from the experts from the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) and Graz University of Technology . The R number refers to the previous 13 epidemic days. The R number tells how many more people an infected person infects. It was below one in all federal states, except for one in Tyrol. The estimated daily rate of increase was therefore minus 2.8 percent.

Five patients have died of or with Covid-19 since Thursday, the seven-day average was 5.3 per day. 37 deaths have been recorded in the past seven days. Overall, the Covid 19 pandemic has claimed 18,333 lives in Austria since it broke out. The AGES dashboard already showed 19,863 deaths in connection with the pandemic on Friday, a difference of exactly 1,550 to the figures from the ministries. It is therefore still unclear exactly how many people have died in Austria since the beginning of the pandemic. About a month ago, the Ministry of Health reported thousands of Covid deaths. You haven’t quite gotten your way through the federal state figures yet. Carinthia, Salzburg, Styria and Vienna reported deaths in April, while the other federal states are still missing the ministry data.
There were 649 Covid patients in the hospital on Friday, 14 fewer than on Thursday. 55 of them were in intensive care units. That number dropped by three since yesterday and dropped by ten patients in a week.
The positive rate of the 221,194 PCR tests carried out was 1.5 percent below the average of the past seven days, in which an average of two percent were positive.
Upper Austria continues to bring up the rear when it comes to vaccinations
On Thursday, 4,274 vaccinations were administered – 130 first, 347 second and 3,797 third bites. According to e-vaccination card data, 6,827,105 people have received at least one vaccination. 5,982,866 people or 66.6 percent of Austrians have a valid vaccination. According to the federal states, the protection rate in Burgenland is by far the highest at 72.9 percent. In all other federal states, less than 70 percent have a valid vaccination certificate. The value ranges from 69.1 percent in Lower Austria to 62.4 percent in Upper Austria, which brings up the rear.
Most new infections were in Vienna with 961, followed by Lower Austria with 638 and Upper Austria with 529. 384 further infections with SARS-CoV-2 were reported in Styria, 209 in Salzburg, 173 in Carinthia, 158 in Tyrol and 105 in Burgenland and in Vorarlberg 77.
