Russia to cut off gas supplies to Finland

“It is very unfortunate that the supply of natural gas under our supply contract is interrupted. However, we have carefully prepared for this situation and there will be no interruptions in the gas supply networks,” said Gasum President Mika Wiljanen. , it’s a statement.

The cut will take place on Saturday from 07:00 local time (01:00 Argentine time), according to Gasum.

Gazprom confirmed a few hours later on Telegram that it will cease gas deliveries to Finland on Saturday, for not having received payment for shipments in April.

Gazprom asked in April that the gas it exports to other countries be paid in rubles and not in euros, but Gasum rejected that demand and announced on Tuesday that it had requested an arbitration procedure.

The spokesman for the Russian presidency, Dmitri Peskov, said on Friday that it is “obvious that nobody will give anything away for free.”

Although gas only represents 8% of Finland’s energy matrix, practically all that is used in the Nordic country comes from Russia.

Finland announced plans to substitute Russian gas next winter, such as leasing a floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification unit with Estonia for ten years.

Gazprom has already cut off gas supplies to other countries, including Poland and Bulgaria, which also refused to pay for deliveries in rubles to avoid supporting the Russian economy during the war in Ukraine.

The tension between Russia and Finland escalated this week after the Finnish authorities made official the request to join NATO, something that Moscow denounced as a threat to its security.

A week ago, Russia had also suspended the supply of electricity to Finland.
