Anyone who commutes to work by train or bus and travels to the bus stops by bike often leaves this behind with a queasy feeling despite the lock. Expensive e-bikes in particular seem to be worth stealing for thieves. Lockable, theft-proof and weatherproof boxes are now available at Kleinzell train station.
The three municipalities of Kleinzell, Niederwaldkirchen and St. Ulrich want to promote the switch to public transport and make it as pleasant as possible. “Only if we organize the last few kilometers from the train station to the place of residence accordingly can we be sure that people use public transport. That’s why it’s important to organize projects like this,” says Harald Haselmayr, Mayor of Niederwaldkirchen. Five theft-proof, upright parking spaces for bicycles, scooters or scooters, which are also equipped with coat hooks, LED lighting and charging options, are now available at the Park & Ride facility at Kleinzell train station. “We are pioneers in the district, because these are more likely to be found in urban areas,” says Kleinzell’s Mayor Klaus Falkinger, who is generally committed to expanding public transport. “We have to create framework conditions for commuters.” Alfred Allerstorfer, Mayor of Ortisei, also recalls the climate aspect, which is becoming more and more important to the citizens: “You can cycle to the train station and, ideally, save yourself the need for a second car.” The total costs for the bike boxes amounting to 30,000 euros are financed by subsidies from the state of Upper Austria, the three municipalities and the climate and energy model region Danube-Bohemian Forest.

“4,800 people from the three communities can reach the station by bike within 15 minutes,” the mayors calculate. They are all potential users of the new mobility station that was developed by the Niederkappler company Innovametall – known to a wide audience at the latest through the installation of the flying ship at the Linzer Höhenrausch. “The most important thing is a system that is as simple and extremely convenient as possible. We have achieved that with our safety docks,” says Christoph Wöss. The boxes are opened and closed after prior registration with a customer card (or ATM card, ÖBB advantage card, climate ticket). One-off short-term parking is just as possible as long-term rent.
You can start by testing the station free of charge: simply request the SMS code on site and park. Three months’ rent will be raffled among all participants. Incidentally, parking costs 30 euros for a month, 50 cents for an hour, and 2 euros per day.
On Friday, June 3, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., there will be an open day at the Safetydock mobility station at the Park&Ride facility at Kleinzell train station. Anyone interested can get to know the system and obtain more detailed information.
