The man had fled from a police checkpoint in Pocking, Bavaria, near the state border, and raced to Upper Austria with German officials on his heels. Again and again he braked violently and drove in wavy lines to push the officers away. The man threw objects at his pursuers from the side window.
Again and again, the rapid escape led to dangerous situations with other road users. One of the things thrown out of the car window hit the windshield of a German patrol car, but did not damage it. About 20 minutes later, the 33-year-old Turk from the Schärding district in the municipality of Polling im Innkreis (Braunau district) stopped his car and fled on foot through a field. One of the German police officers sprinted faster and pinned the fugitive to the ground. A little later, the Austrian colleagues came and arrested the man.
The 33-year-old offered no resistance. According to the police report, he appeared to be severely impaired, and an ordered drug test showed positive results for several illegal substances. Cannabis and the synthetic drug crystal meth were found in his car, as well as some Czech and German license plates that had been reported as stolen. He also had numerous empty canisters, hoses and pumps in the car that smelled heavily of fuel. The 33-year-old was reported to the Ried im Innkreis public prosecutor’s office for several crimes. In addition, numerous complaints about administrative violations were made to the Braunau district authority.
