The Olympic bronze medalist from Tokyo threw the discus 65.14 m in his best attempt on Saturday in Birmingham, and he also had another valid one with 62.08. Victory went to Slovenia’s Kristjan Ceh, who set a national record with 71.27. Lithuanian Andrius Gudzius (66.40) took second place, followed by Swedish Olympic champion Daniel Stahl (65.97).

Weißhaidinger credited his account with five points, the best six athletes qualify for the Diamond League final in Zurich in September. “I can live very well with fourth place. The distance is okay, but technically I still have to improve a lot,” the 30-year-old knew.

Trainer Gregor Högler saw the goal exactly fulfilled, it had been over 65 m and at least fourth place. “Lukas did an absolutely respectable job. Everyone else except Ceh was within reach.”

Canadian Aaron Brown won the 100m in 10.13 seconds. After false starts, favorite Trayvon Bromell from the USA and local hope Zharnel Hughes were disqualified. The women’s short sprint was won by Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith in 11.11.
