RB Leipzig won the cup thriller against Freiburg

The score was 1-1 after regulation time and extra time. All Leipzig shooters scored in the penalty shoot-out, Christian Günter and Ermedin Demirovic failed for Freiburg. Konrad Laimer was in action for the winners until the 99th minute, Philipp Lienhart played through at Freiburg.

Leipzig had the first good chance of the game in the 14th minute when attempts by Emil Forsberg and Christopher Nkunku were blocked. Maximilian Eggestein (19′) scored the opening goal from a distance on the other side, although Roland Sallai’s unintentional handball had directly preceded it. There was no objection from the video assistant, however, as Sallai wasn’t the scorer himself.

The Freiburg defense led by Lienhart then offered a strong performance and made it difficult for the RB attackers to put themselves in the limelight despite being superior to the field. When Marcel Halstenberg was the last man to pull down Lucas Höler from Freiburg in the 57th minute, the red card was unavoidable for the defender. But Leipzig continued to try.

After Laimer’s template and Willi Orban’s header extension, Nkunku (76th) pushed the ball over the line with a long step to make it 1-1. In the hectic final phase of the 90 minutes, the Saxons had the better chances. Freiburg was more active in extra time, but without any luck. In the 104th minute, Leipzig saved the bar, ten minutes later the bar before the goal. Shortly before the end there was still excitement about an alleged penalty foul on Leipzig’s Dani Olmo, which was not given.

Before the award ceremony, there was a medical emergency on the sidelines of the Olympic Stadium. A photographer had to be treated on the sidelines by rescue workers and transported by ambulance. The award ceremony started later.
