Agriculture Minister Totschnig: “I’m a lobbyist for the farmers”

Agriculture Minister Totschnig: “I’m a lobbyist for the farmers”

In a series of interviews, the new minister emphasized that he wanted to “work on an overall view” of animal welfare standards, that there would be a relief package for the farmers and that the climate in the coalition was good. Regarding the work of the governing coalition, Totschnig stated: “My first impression was that there is a will to make things happen.” And he emphasized: “I’m not a lobbyist for the farmers’ association, I’m a lobbyist for the farmers.” He said that the food industry, with which his predecessor Elisabeth Köstinger often fought, was an “important partner”.

In view of the war in Ukraine, is he in favor of building up food stocks, as with gas? “There is a discussion and we will look into it.” And whether he could imagine export bans, for example for wheat? “We are a free internal market. It is a very important signal that individual initiatives are not being started in the Union,” said Totschnig.

On wolves: “I’m against romanticizing the return”

Regarding the permitted castration of piglets without anesthetic, Totschnig said: “There was finally an agreement with the farmers on how to proceed in the future. That’s the status we have at the moment, and I have to take note of it.” Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens) is responsible for animal welfare agendas. “I’ve been in office for two days now. I ask for your understanding that I’m primarily concerned with my real core areas. These are agriculture, forestry, water management and regions. That’s where I’ll start,” said the minister.
When asked about the controversial issue of shooting wolves, the new minister, who, as the son of a Tyrolean farmer, has lived in Vienna for many years, said: “You can no longer assume that everyone is familiar with the world of agriculture. You have to explain that.” He was “against the romanticization of the return, but for nature conservation with common sense”. As minister, however, he will do everything at all levels to support the federal states and farmers “so that problem wolves can be removed”.

To Sebastian Kurz: “I believe him”

Asked whether ex-Chancellor Sebastian Kurz was wronged with the numerous legal allegations, Totschnig said: “Independent courts decide that. The media prejudice is a shame. He says he has done nothing wrong. I believe him.”
