North Korea, whose population of 25 million inhabitants is not vaccinated against the coronavirus, reported its first cases of the Omicron variant nine days ago.

North Korean health authorities today confirmed nearly 220,000 new infections and one death, the Europa Press news agency reported.

North Korean state media reported that a total of about 2.5 million people were sick with “fever” and that 66 deaths have been reported to date.

Due to the lack of tests to confirm coronavirus infections, health authorities are reporting infections as a strange “fever”

Although some foreign countries view the evolution of the pandemic with some concern, it has been reported from within North Korea’s borders that the spread of the pandemic has been contained and reduced, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported.

For their part, Biden and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol expressed concern about the outbreak in North Korea.

Both presidents said they “stand ready to work with the international community to provide assistance” to Pyongyang, according to a joint statement.

Experts warned that the situation could trigger a serious health crisis in North Korea, whose health system is seriously deficient, the AFP news agency reported.

Yoon said the aid offer was made in accordance with “humanitarian principles, regardless of political and military issues” with Pyongyang.
