Ukraine extended martial law until August

The parliament had declared general mobilization and martial law for three months after the Russian invasion, which occurred on February 24, at the request of President Volodimir Zelensky.

The country also ruled out a ceasefire or any territorial concessions to Moscow as Russia intensified its attack on the eastern Donbass region and stopped sending gas to Finland, its latest response to Western sanctions and growing international isolation.

Ukraine’s top negotiator, speaking to Reuters on Saturday, ruled out a ceasefire or any deal with Moscow that would give up territory. Making concessions would be counterproductive because Russia would hit back harder after any lull in fighting, Zelensky adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said.

“The war will not stop. It will only be put on pause for some time,” Podolyak said in an interview at the heavily guarded presidential office. “They will start a new offensive, even bloodier and on a large scale.”
