Two years of construction, eight million euros in costs, two million liters of water capacity: These are the key data of the new elevated tank, which has been making the drinking water supply for Linz and 25 other communities even safer since autumn last year.
“We are thus increasing the network feed-in capacity from the Goldwörth waterworks from 45 to 60 million liters of drinking water per day,” said Erich Haider, Director General of Linz AG, at the ceremonial opening of the building on Monday. This guarantees security of supply, even in the event of natural disasters (drought, storms with heavy rain). With the new elevated tank “built on innovation”, one is prepared for the future in which more frequent and more intense weather phenomena are to be expected due to climate change.
The higher storage capacity, which is available in two chambers, also contributes to security of supply in the Hitzing elevated tank – the old one was almost 50 years old. “For example, the supply is now guaranteed even if the Goldwörth waterworks is at a standstill,” says Reinhold Plöchl, Head of Linz AG Water. Technically, too, they are now state-of-the-art. The drinking water is once again oxygenated during heating before it is “sent” to the customers.
Linz is sitting on a drinking water treasure, as Mayor Klaus Luger put it as Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Linz AG. You can’t do anything about it, but you know how to use it. The people in the supply area of Linz AG would be able to consume first-class drinking water.
Provincial Councilor Stefan Kaineder also confirmed that water is our central basis of life. Nobody in the country has to think about the quality when they turn on the tap in their own four walls. That goes without saying for everyone in Upper Austria. And that will also be the case in times of crisis.
Four waterworks (Goldwörth, Scharlinz, Heilham, Plesching), 66 pumping stations or pressure boosting systems, 32 elevated tanks, 24 wells and a 1249-kilometer-long pipeline network are available for the drinking water supply of Linz AG.
