the LGBTIQ+ collective asks that it not be linked to monkeypox

The Ministry of Health of the Government of the island specified yesterday that only one of the two cases of monkeypox officially detected there was at that festivalaccording to the Spanish media.

Faced with this, the State Federation of Lesbians, Gays, Trans, Bisexuals, Intersexuals and more (FELGTBI+) of Spain asks that do not join this groupparticularly men who have sex with men, such as risk group for monkeypox and not be held responsible for the spread of the disease.

“It is necessary to point out the important repercussions of linking a disease with a group, both at a social level and on a personal and psychological levelsince it creates a stigma, which, if it settles, is very difficult to combat,” the federation explains in a statement.

The organization echoed the declarations of the General Director of Public Health of the Community of Madrid, Elena Andradaswho assured that “due to the characteristics of these 23 cases, the transmission points to a contact with infected mucous membranes during sexual intercourse” and noted that “they are all young men.

“It is necessary that all the agents involved be responsible and do not promote disinformation, since this has a double effect, on the one hand, stigmatizes vulnerable groups and, on the other, it generates a false sense of invulnerability in the rest of the population,” the federation added in response to Andradas’s remarks.

How is monkeypox spread?

Mostly transmitted from wild animals to humans. Until now, what is known is that it is necessary to have a very close contact because It is transmitted by body fluids, although it can also be indirectly (contacts with these fluids, such as saliva).

Most of the cases within Europe were the result of sexual intercourse, but they also point to possible transmission by aerosols. Aerosol transmission of disease depends on the deposition of the suspected pathogen in the host’s respiratory system and its integrity and infectious potential.
