Scarcity: USA has to fly in baby food

In addition to supply bottlenecks and staff shortages due to the corona pandemic, production at the largest US milk powder factory in Michigan came to a halt in February after two infants died. As a result, there were major recalls.

Now US President Joe Biden has declared the elimination of the bottlenecks to be a top priority and has announced an airlift for this purpose. Yesterday, the first military plane with 31 tons of special baby food from the Swiss manufacturer Nestle landed in Indianapolis, where the group has a hub.

The amount is enough to fill around 500,000 baby bottles. That corresponds to about 15 percent of current needs, said Biden’s economic advisor Brian Deese to the US broadcaster CNN. The future flights are to be handled with commercial aircraft.

Babies who cannot tolerate milk and are therefore dependent on special food are particularly affected by the bottleneck.
