Gabriel Boric enacted the largest increase in the minimum wage in 29 years

“It is really satisfying to be able to show that as a government, and together with social organizations, we can move towards common goals,” Boric stressed at the act of enactment of the law.

The president stressed that, although there are discrepancies between the Executive and the different social agents, once they agree they manage to get “the best” of themselves.

“We seek that no one is left behind, that SMEs are not left behind,” he said.

Salaries will be readjusted from this month to 380,000 Chilean pesos per month (3,195 dollars), and in August they will rise to 400,000 pesos (3,364 dollars).

In January, and if twelve-month inflation exceeds 7%, the minimum wage will rise to 410,000 Chilean pesos (3,448.dollars).

“In this government the doors of dialogue and conversation will always be open because we want to be the government of the workers,” Boric said in a message on his Twitter account.

Finally, the president attributed part of the chance to promote this measure to “the base built” by his predecessors of Chilean democracy.

“Here as a government, as president, we cannot bask in this as if it were an achievement of our own. Because this was done on the basis of what was built at the time by (Patricio) Aylwin, (Eduardo) Frei, (Ricardo) Lagos, (Michelle) Bachelet, (Sebastián) Piñera and the different governments with the efforts they were able to make at the time,” he said.according to the site of La Tercera.

Boric added: “Here I want to insist on this point: we are building on the basis of what those who preceded us did. We could not talk about increasing the minimum wage to 400 thousand pesos, if it were not for the efforts that were made previously.”
