Brazil reduced Mercosur tariffs by 10% again

In a statement issued in brazil, it is detailed that the measure covers goods such as beans, meats, pasta, crackers, rice, Construction materialsamong others of the Common External Tariff (TEC) of the bloc.

These items already they had had a 10% reduction in November last yearaccording to Gecex Resolution No. 269/2021 and adding the new measure to the previous one, more than 87% of the NCM tariff codes saw their rate reduced to 0% or reduced by a total of 20%.

The decision was made by the Foreign Trade Chamber after an extraordinary meeting and is of a “temporary and exceptional nature”said the Secretary of Foreign Trade, Lucas Ferraz.

Brazil had the highest inflation since 1994 for the months of April and March and accumulates in 12 months an advance of 12.3 in the price index, three times more than the goal defined by the Central Bank, which raised the interest rate to try to contain domestic demand and make credit more expensive.

The measure was announced by Ferraz, by the deputy head of the Foreign Trade Chamber, Ana Repezza, and the deputy minister of Economy, Marcelo Guaranys.

“The objective – the statement adds – is to alleviate the negative economic consequences of the pandemic and the war in Ukraine, mainly the rise in the cost of living of the population with the lowest income and the increase in the cost of the companies that consume these supplies in production and marketing of goods.

Secretary Ferraz affirmed that since 1994 “the revision” of the Common External Tariff that governs Mercosur had not been so extensive.

Meanwhile, Guaranys said that “the government continues to negotiate with the Mercosur partners, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay, to make this measure permanent.”

The decision of the government of Jair Bolsonaro goes beyond electoral times, since the president is playing for re-election on October 2 and the next government will take office on January 1, 2023.

The resolution will be published tomorrow in the Official Gazette.
