The change now allows the government to declare a state of emergency in the event of an armed conflict in a neighboring country or a humanitarian disaster. In a state of emergency, the government may govern by decree or suspend the application of certain laws.
“Protect Hungary by all means”
Orbán said the measure would give the Hungarian leadership “the opportunity to react immediately and protect Hungary and the Hungarian families by any means possible”. The prime minister also emphasized that his new government, which was only sworn in today, Tuesday, has started work immediately because “a war is raging in our neighborhood and no one can foresee the end of it.” This requires immediate action. Orbán announced that he would provide information about his government’s first decisions tomorrow, Wednesday.
Corona emergency expires at the end of May
The Hungarian government first announced a state of emergency in March 2020 in response to the corona pandemic. At the time, this provoked fierce criticism at home and abroad, since it would effectively eliminate parliament. The Corona emergency was repeatedly extended in a row and officially expires on May 31 of this year.
