Serious accident in a climbing hall in Hallstatt

According to the police, the rope used was too short. The ambulance took the injured to the hospital.

The accident happened in the climbing hall in Hallstatt. The 51-year-old was part of a group of five who met there to climb together. The people from Hallstatt formed two rope teams and secured each other for lead climbing. They used ropes from the climbing gym. They set aside one that was obviously too short.

“Suddenly the rope was off”

The 51-year-old drove away in the meantime and returned to the climbing gym just before 8 p.m. After he had put on his harness and climbing shoes, he made the fatal mistake. He grabbed the short rope. Before climbing, he carried out a check with his belay partner (36). “However, neither of them looked at the end of the rope, where there was no knot,” said the state police department.

The 51-year-old then climbed a route with a difficulty level of VI+. Once at the top, he was let down by the 36-year-old. “Suddenly the rope was off and ran through the belay device,” police said. The climber then fell four to five meters unchecked to the ground. His friends provided first aid and notified the emergency services. The 51-year-old was then flown by the emergency helicopter to the accident hospital in Salzburg.
