Since 7 a.m., “about 150 to 200 people” have been blocking the construction site on Hausfeldstrasse, reported Lucia Steinwender, spokeswoman for LobauBleibt, the APA. The immediate halt to construction and the expansion of cycle paths and public transport in the district were required.
“Today we are standing in the way of the destruction of our livelihoods and the concrete policy of the Viennese SPÖ. Here, on the construction sites of the city motorway, the SPÖ is casting the climate crisis in concrete. In doing so, they are once again putting the interests of construction companies and the car lobby ahead of the needs of the people in the city on the Danube,” says Steinwender. The demonstrators, dressed in red rain overalls, marched to the site, climbed onto construction containers and put up the banner “Block diggers and buggers!”.
“We stand and sit, some are chained, and we prevent construction work on the city highway,” Steinwender described the situation to APA. Construction workers who actually came to work and police forces are also on the spot.
The reoccupied area is the place where the protest camp with the wooden pyramid, the symbol of the protest camp, was once located. Activists stayed there for months to prevent construction work on the city road from starting. On February 1, the camp was cleared after hours of police action. At that time there were 48 arrests, the pyramid was demolished immediately after the evacuation.
