2,935 new infections and twelve more fatalities

The seven-day incidence fell to 199.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants – for the first time since the end of 2021 it was below 200 again. The 2,935 new infections are above the average of the past seven days, with 2,559 more infected people added every day. In a weekly comparison, however, the numbers are declining, last Wednesday 4,322 new infections were registered, three weeks ago there were 6,760 more than twice as many. Although immune protection could continue to decrease in the future and infections increase, the timing and strength of this effect is still unclear according to the prognosis consortium. On Wednesday there were still 40,239 laboratory-confirmed active cases in Austria, 934 fewer than the day before.

Positive development in the hospitals

The development among hospital patients continues to be positive. A total of 549 infected people had to be hospitalized on Wednesday, 47 fewer than on Tuesday. About four weeks ago – on May 4th – there were 1,111 Covid 19 patients, more than twice as many. 44 seriously ill people had to be treated in intensive care units on Wednesday. On May 2nd, at 90, there were more than twice as many intensive care patients.

The number of dead is again very high. Twelve more have been registered since Tuesday alone, and there were a total of 299 deaths in the past week. Exactly how many people who have tested positive have died so far is still unclear after the late notification of Covid deaths more than a month ago, they still have not fully made it through to the federal state figures. The interior and health ministries reported 18,619 deaths since the pandemic began on Wednesday. The dashboard of the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) had already reported 19,876 deaths on Tuesday.

Since the beginning of the pandemic there have already been 4,240,295 confirmed cases in Austria. 4,181,437 people are considered recovered. The federal state with the highest seven-day incidence is currently Vienna with 287.9, followed by Lower Austria, Salzburg and Burgenland (233.4, 198.7 and 191.9 respectively). It is followed by Upper Austria (166.3), Vorarlberg (155.1), Styria (140), Carinthia (138) and Tyrol (135.8).

In the past 24 hours, 256,945 rapid PCR and antigen tests have been registered across Austria. Of these, 231,692 were meaningful PCR tests, the positive rate was 1.3 percent. On average, almost 180,000 PCR tests were analyzed every day in the past week, and an average of 1.8 percent of the PCR tests were positive.

3,238 corona vaccinations were administered throughout Austria on Tuesday, 106 of which were initial vaccinations. According to the data from the e-vaccination card, a total of 6,827,742 people have already received at least one vaccination. Exactly 5,929,424 people and thus 66 percent of Austrians have a valid vaccination. There are fewer and fewer – in the past week alone 66,515 vaccination certificates have expired.
