The Swedish-born former head boss was confirmed in office in Milan at the 53rd Congress of the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) – the new name of the world association fixed beforehand – with 100 percent of the delegate votes cast. He took over this in June 2021 from the late Swiss Gianfranco Kaspar.
Eliasch was the only candidate who should have voted by acclamation at Thursday’s general assembly. At the request of several delegates, a secret ballot was set by ballot. The Croatian delegate Vedran Pavlek, who was not satisfied with the question, left the room in protest before the vote, several others followed. Eliasch received the highest possible support from the remaining delegates.
“We need change, we need change,” the FIS boss reacted to the trust. “It’s a vote that lets us move further in that direction. I’m looking forward to it.” The 60-year-old also spoke of unlimited opportunities. Radical reform efforts and a lack of communication had made the national associations move away from the billionaire in the run-up to the meeting. Much discussed topics are radical approaches for the design of the Alpine World Cup calendar and the desired central marketing of the rights.
Before Eliasch’s election, the 80-year-old Peter Schröcks Nadel had been thanked for his long service on the FIS Board with a standing ovation. The former ÖSV President from Tyrol will no longer be Austria’s FIS contribution as Vice President. In the further course of the meeting, ÖSV financial officer Patrick Ortlieb presented himself for the election for the new FIS board.
