This group, which was formed after the dissolution of a paramilitary group, is accused of the murder of Lucas Villa, a young man who participated in a protest in the city of Pereira on May 5 and was shot eight times.
The threat was a reason for the Director General of the Police, General Jorge Luis Vargas, to give the order to reinforce “all the institutions” in order to protect Petro from a possible attack, although he stated that for the moment “there is no hypothesis research” on a plan.
In the last few hours, the Attorney General’s Office decided to open an investigation into the case and contact the candidate’s security specialists.
“The team of prosecutors and investigators of the Thematic Axis of Threats against Human Rights Defenders and Social Leaders, which took on the case, contacted those in charge of Mr. Petro Urrego’s security and with the people in his campaign to obtain details about the origin of the known information and guide the inquiries,” reported the entity.
This situation caused different candidates to show solidarity with the founder of the Colombia Humana party, something that was spread by him on his social networks.
In a list published on his Twitter account, the current senator showed the support of Elizabeth Gomez Alcorta, Minister of Women, Gender and Diversity; the former Ecuadorian president, Rafael Correa; the prestigious American professor Noam Chomsky; among others.

His vice-candidate was also threatened
“The slander, the racist demonstrations are not enough, but in less than a month they have threatened me with death 2 times,” revealed on her social networks Francia Márquez, Petro’s vice-presidential candidate.
In a more incisive tone, the Afro-descendant leader called on President Iván Duque to guarantee her safety and that of her family members.
Márquez has already faced threats that came to fruition: in 2019 he survived an attack with grenades and rifle blasts for his defense of water in Afro-descendant communities and his fierce opposition to mining activity.
Her militancy led her to obtain the National Human Rights Award in 2015 and the Goldman Prize in 2018, known as the Nobel Prize for the environment.
“They told us that politics was not for us, that our place as black women was as domestic workers. Making their houses beautiful, raising their children. To come back here to bury our own. Those chains of oppression have to be broken,” she said in a speech this year.
Petro, leader in the polls
A few days before the vote, the center-left candidate is at the top of the preferences of Colombians, according to the main managers of the measurements.
The Latin American Strategic Center for Geopolitics (Celag) has a 45% vote intention, while the businessman Rodolfo Hernández reaches 20.4% and the former mayor of Medellín, Federico Gutiérrez, 20.1%.
The latest report from the National Consulting Center (CNC), presented on May 19, also showed Petro first with 35.8%, followed by Gutiérrez with 20.8% and Hernández with 19.1%.
As long as invader released a report that has the former mayor of Bogotá with 40.6%, and Gutiérrez appears far behind with 27.1% and Hernández is third with 20.9%.
