A teacher who united people with music and sport

Always go through life with a mischievous smile and, above all, with ease – this basic attitude shaped Wolfgang Famler’s entire life. Whether in his many years of work in education, in sports or in music, which turned out to be a great passion for the Sattledter native at a young age.

Strongly influenced by his father, who, in addition to his work as a secondary school principal, also led the brass band in Sattledt as a bandmaster, Wolfgang Famler recognized his great musical talent very early on.

While still at school he was actively involved in choirs and theater performances. In order to further train his bass voice, the gifted singer completed a singing course at the Bruckner Conservatory. “At all family celebrations, but especially at Christmas, we played music together. That was very important to my father because he wanted to pass on his passion for music to us children,” remembers his son Stephan.

Music as a central design element also shaped his years of service as a teacher. After training at the Pedagogical Academy of the Diocese of Linz, where he passed the teaching examination in mathematics, music and physical education, he was drawn to several schools, most recently to the Stadl-Paura secondary school. Here, as director, he significantly transformed the school into an NMS and initiated a school choir. “My father was a full-blooded educator and wanted to set accents in music and sports in his function and thus unite people,” says his son.

Because Wolfgang Famler also left his mark in sport. He was able to express his special love for the mountains in the Lambach Alpine Club and as manager of the Lambacher Hütte. But he also worked as a pre-gymnast and ski instructor at the Union in Lambach and Wels.

Despite his numerous activities and passions, Wolfgang Famler never forgot one thing: his family. After his first marriage to Susanne Steiner, from which his children Stephan and Karin were born, Wolfgang Famler married the religion teacher Gisela in 2001. Together with their son Jakob, who was born in 2002, they both moved to Lambach, where he always lived in his pension to the family and even to building the nativity scene.

Shortly after his 70th birthday, Wolfgang Famler died on May 13th after a short, serious illness. With his life’s work, he left deep marks on his family, his friends and in many clubs.
