Formula 1: Leclerc in Monaco on pole position

His Ferrari team-mate Carlos Sainz, Sergio Perez and Max Verstappen in the Red Bull came in the other places. For Leclerc it was the 14th pole position in his career – he now has as many as the Dutchman Verstappen.

In the World Cup standings, defending champion Verstappen is just six points ahead of Leclerc. So far, the Ferrari driver has been the better of the two in qualifying, having started from pole position four times while Verstappen only once. On the narrow street circuit in Monaco, pole is a great advantage because there are practically no chances of overtaking on the shortest racetrack on the current Formula 1 calendar.

Leclerc took pole position in his home country for the second time in a row. Last year, however, he was unable to use his place at the front of the starting grid. Transmission damage resulting from an accident in qualifying the day before forced him to retire before the start of the race. The race starts on Sunday at 3 p.m. (live ORF 1 and Sky).
