Another six lost their lives in another landslide in the municipality of Camaragibe. Two died in Recife and another in Jaboatao dos Guararapes.
The latest balance puts 33 dead “in the state” since the rains began to hit that region on Tuesday night. “Five other deaths had already occurred in Tuesday’s storm,” the statement said, without giving further details.
According to the local press, of those five deaths, four were in Olinda: three buried by landslides and one after falling into a canal.
The intense rains also left almost a thousand people had to leave their homes due to floods and landslides.
Videos posted on social media show wide avenues flooded by fast-flowing rivers in various municipalities, houses collapsing and hills collapsing amid cries of despair.
“The water is rising. We are waiting for rescue,” explained Lidiane Izidio, a resident of Jaboatao dos Guararapes on the roof of her completely flooded house, to the GloboNews channel.
Images from that station showed the residents of that municipality collaborating with the rescue forces in the search for the disappeared due to a hill slide.
Between Friday night and Saturday morning, the volume of rain reached 236 millimeters in some points of the Pernambuco capital, according to the mayor’s office.
