After his bitter retirement at Le Mans, the Italian won at Mugello ahead of championship leader Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha) and Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia). Enea Bastianini crashed, as did the two Suzuki riders. Former World Champion Marc Marquez, who has to undergo another operation on his right arm today, finished tenth ahead of pole sitter Fabio Di Giannantonio (Ducati). Incidentally, Jorge Martin set a new top speed record at 363.6 km/h.
KTM is currently only really enjoying the two smaller classes after Brad Binder finished seventh and was the best Oranger in MotoGP yesterday. Meanwhile, Spanish prodigy Pedro Acosta took his first win in the middle category, becoming the youngest ever Moto2 winner four days after his 18th birthday. In Moto3, world championship leader Sergio Garcia, on a bike from KTM subsidiary GasGas, benefited from a penalty for teammate Izan Guevara, who, as the actual race winner, was relegated to second place after exceeding the “track limits”.
