President Pedro Castillo is being investigated for criminal organization and influence peddling

Pedro Castillo “was notified of this provision and his investigative statement has been ordered, in addition to the other proceedings already arranged previously, which will allow the due and necessary clarification of the facts,” said the Public Ministry in a statement published under the form of a “thread” on Twitter.

The investigation will be carried out “without prejudice to other crimes that may be detected in the course of the investigations” and during its course, Castillo “will be guaranteed the full exercise of his right to defense,” as well as “respect for article 117 of the Constitution”.

That article establishes that while in office, a president in Peru can only be criminally charged for a limited series of causes, which do not include the crimes that are the subject of this investigation.

The investigation, “initially opened against former minister Juan Silva and six congressmen, was expanded after a legal technical analysis, given the seriousness and seriousness of the accusations,” explained the Public Ministry in a thread of messages on its Twitter account.

The case was opened at the beginning of this month by order of the Nation’s prosecutor, Pablo Sánchez, and initially reached Silva -former Minister of Transport and Communications- and six legislators from the opposition party Acción Popular.

These parliamentarians are called Los Niños, after businesswoman Karelim López mentioned them – related to this and other cases also under investigation – because “they obeyed the president in everything,” according to the Europa Press news agency.

The prosecution is investigating whether they are part of an alleged criminal network that operated in the Ministry of Transport and Communications and that would be led by Pedro Castillo.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the alleged criminal organization had two groups with defined tasks.

The first recruited and negotiated with businessmen, and was made up of the then Secretary General of the Presidency, Bruno Pacheco; businessman Zamir Villaverde, and two nephews of the president: Fray Vásquez Castillo and Gian Marco Castillo Gómez.

The second group would be responsible for the execution of the crime favoring certain companies in the contracts and would be made up of officials from the Decentralized Provías body previously designated by Silva.

The Public Ministry maintains that the organization had a vertical structure, with members at different levels.

Zoraida Ávalos, the previous prosecutor of the Nation, opened two investigations against President Castillo, although she suspended them until the end of her mandate, scheduled for July 2026.

One was due to alleged irregularities in Petroperú and Provías Nacional, and the other due to officer promotions in the Armed Forces and the National Police.
