A parking space at the end of Traunsteinstrasse isn’t gold, but it’s worth a lot of money since this year. A day ticket for the turning point costs 25 euros. A decision that the Gmunden municipal council made in December last year and which was implemented in May of this year.
The rest of the street has been declared a short-term toll-free zone (180 minutes) on weekends and public holidays. Too little time for those who don’t want to lace up their running shoes. Both for the summit of the Traunstein and for hikes in the Kaltenbach wilderness or to the Mairalm.
A shuttle bus (10 euros round trip) brings hikers to the popular starting point. However, it does not run on weekdays.
The traffic situation at the foot of the Traunstein is a “Gwirks”. Hut owners, mountaineers and alpine clubs all agree on this. In mid-April, they went to a demonstration for a “fair transport concept” on Traunsteinstrasse.
Traffic calming was also called for, but with different means: daily transfer by bus or boat at a moderate price, establishment of a bicycle rental service, a reduction in parking fees to one euro per hour and moderate charging of the entire Traunsteinstraße for daily bus transfers.
Gerald Auinger, landlord of the Gmundnerhütte and his employee “Pesef” have the current situationation now processed musically – with the “Untan Stoan-Blues”.
