The village of Perdasdefogu on the island of Sardinia has been inscribed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the municipality with the highest rate of centenarians on the planet relative to population. Of the 1,778 total residents, eight native and resident citizens are 100 years of age or older. So that’s more than four centenarians for every thousand people.
The oldest citizen, Perdasdefogus, is 104 years old, Italian media reported on Monday. Because of the number of centenarians, the Sardinian community is among the five Blue Zones in the world with the oldest population, together with the islands Okinawa in Japan and Ikaria in Greece, the Nicoya-Peninsula in Costa Rica and the municipality Loma Linda in California.
Nine siblings together 828 years old
“We are a community that is being studied by various scientists and universities. Thousands of DNA samples have been taken to analyze the genetic characteristics of our community,” explained Salvatore Mura, historian of the village. He has been passionate about the history and genetic trees of Perdasdefogu for years.
“After years of research, studies continue to show that we live well and healthy here. This makes us proud and full of energy for future projects in our area,” said the mayor of the municipality, Mariano Carta.
A family also lived in Perdasdefogu, which was considered the longest-lived in the world. Nine siblings were 828 years old there in 2014. With this, the Melis family made it into the Guinness Book of Records. Clan leader Consolata Melis died in 2015 at the age of 107.
