Introduced mosquitoes as pathogens

The Asian tiger mosquito poses a health risk because it can transmit the Chikungunya, Dengue and Zika viruses with its bites. In addition to the nationwide monitoring of AGES, the state of Upper Austria is therefore running its own monitoring program in order to be able to recognize the small bloodsuckers in good time, says Health Minister Christine Haberlander (VP).

A sighting in Linz

So far, the Asian tiger mosquito has mainly been sighted in Vienna and Graz, but last year there was also a find in Linz. According to Haberlander, there are a few simple measures that all garden owners can follow to help stop the mosquito from spreading. Breeding grounds for these insects are therefore puddles that remain for at least a week.

Avoid puddles in the garden

Therefore, you should not let them develop on balconies, terraces or in gardens in the first place. It is recommended to empty water in flower pot saucers, bird baths etc. once a week and to cover rain barrels. Unlike native mosquitoes, tiger mosquitoes are also active during the day. Their coloring is striking: black with white stripes on the body and legs.
