On Monday night, 150 firefighters did their best in Haibach im Mühlkreis to protect a single-family home whose roof structure had caught fire from the worst. What partially succeeded: The emergency services were able to prevent the flames from spreading to the residential building of a 59-year-old.
But the annex, in which the daughter (25) and her partner (27) live, was badly affected. According to the police, the damage is up to 200,000 euros.
The 25-year-old heard a loud crackle around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday. She and her friend checked and saw that the attic was already engulfed in flames. The young woman immediately called the fire department while her boyfriend and father were still trying desperately to fight the fire with fire extinguishers. The 59-year-old suffered minor burn injuries to his upper body.
The Haibach and Reichenau fire brigades in the Mühlkreis were the first to arrive, and they quickly alerted additional forces. “The affected settlement is on a hill,” says the Urfahraner district fire brigade commander Johannes Enzenhofer. The firefighters therefore laid additional lines with a total length of around 2000 meters to ensure the supply of extinguishing water.

Search for cause of fire
“The fire started in the new building,” says Enzenhofer. The cause of the fire was not known yesterday. Investigators began searching for clues. But before the building could be entered safely, the fire was extinguished all night long. The firefighters had to remove the roof in order to be able to reach the smaller nests of embers. A solar system mounted on the roof also had to be removed.
A team from the Linz professional fire brigade also came to support. They had a special extinguishing lance with a built-in drill (Drill-X) with them. This can be used to extinguish specific areas without having to tear down entire parts of the roof.
At 8:19 a.m., the fire was considered extinguished, but further embers flared up in the morning, necessitating another operation.
