López Obrador calls the suspension of the Mayan Train politicking

“This is a ‘politics’ issue of those who do not want the work to be carried out, they are pseudo-environmentalists financed by large companies, especially tourism and also by foreign governments,” the leftist president said in his morning press conference.

On Monday, a ruling was made known by a federal judge ordering stop indefinitely the 60 km section between the tourist resorts of Playa del Carmen and Tulumin the Riviera Maya, for not complying with environmental regulations.

The government is preparing the required environmental impact studies for the work and may resort to a higher instance to revoke the suspension of work, which has been in force since last April after a first court ruling.

“We are sure that the work will continue. We are going to comply legally and they will not be able to stop us and private interests will not prevailThey will not be above the general interest,” López Obrador said.

The work was stopped after a legal appeal filed by environmentalists, who claim that this work would cause enormous damage to the area, known for its jungles and cenotes (underground freshwater wells).

“There are environmentalists financed by the United States government,” López Obrador claimed, stressing that his government will seek to appeal the ruling in court so that the construction, in charge of the Army, continues.

Another section of the work, between Cancun and Tulum, was also provisionally suspended by a judge on May 2.

The “Mayan Train” appears along with an airport that serves the capital and a refinery in Tabasco (south), among López Obrador’s flagship projects. The railway is scheduled to run 1,554 km and is expected to be completed in 2023.
