This also applies to the hospital floor, it said on Wednesday in the update of the model computer from TU Vienna, MedUni Vienna and Gesundheit Österreich GmbH (GÖG). A seven-day incidence in the range of 120 to 190 cases per 100,000 inhabitants is expected for next Wednesday, with an average of 140 cases assumed.
The lowest seven-day incidence is expected in Carinthia (68% confidence interval of 58 to 95 cases) and the highest in Vienna (190 to 310). The announced end of the school tests from the coming calendar week (week 23) is not yet relevant for the current forecast. However, according to the current document, this will lead to a change in reporting dynamics in the foreseeable future.
BA.2 still predominant
In the short-term forecast it is still assumed that the dynamics will remain driven by the Omikron variant BA.2. According to the AGES variant surveillance, the distribution of the subvariants BA.4/5 shows a prevalence of about seven percent throughout Austria in week 21. However, there are strong differences between the federal states from Vienna with around 15 percent to Styria less than one percent. The growth advantage of these variants is estimated at around 40 percent with a variant-specific reproduction number of 1.2 (weeks 19 to 21).
Significant decrease in hospital patients
The two-week forecast for the surface covering in the normal wards assumes a decrease from 432 Covid patients on May 31st to an average of 261 on June 15th. In the intensive care units, the number of beds occupied by infected people is likely to decrease from 43 to an average of 26 during this period. The coating prognosis does not distinguish between people whose hospitalization is causally attributable to Covid-19 and people who were originally hospitalized due to a different diagnosis.
Portugal’s numbers rise because of BA.5
Corona numbers are rising again in Portugal due to the spread of the more contagious omicron subvariant BA.5. According to the National Health Institute INSA, around 87 percent of all new infections registered are now due to this variant. The seven-day incidence of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants has quadrupled since mid-April to around 1,800 most recently.
Despite the high vaccination rate of 87 percent in Portugal, the number of hospital patients and mortality related to Covid-19 has recently increased. There are hardly any corona restrictions in the country with a good ten million inhabitants. Masks are only compulsory in public transport, nursing homes and hospitals. However, the authorities advise voluntarily wearing a mouth and nose protector wherever there is an increased risk of infection.
