3,728 new corona cases on Wednesday

The value is not only above the average of the past seven days (2,225), but also significantly exceeds the 2,935 new infections last Wednesday. However, the Ministry of Health continued to see a stable situation.

According to a statement by the ministry, after two months of continuous declines in the number of new infections and hospital patients, the experts are currently expecting the infection situation to be largely stable. A slight fluctuation from day to day is “possible at any time”.

Downtrend to continue

The current report by the Corona Commission states: “The current forecast assumes a further downward trend in most of Austria. Both slight increases and slight decreases are possible in the forecast interval. A slight decrease in hospital occupancy can also be expected”.

Due to the increasing spread of virus variants BA.4 and BA.5 and a decrease in immune protection, according to many experts from the health department, the number of infections can be expected to increase again in the medium term. “These forecasts were already taken into account in the decision to relax the mask requirement,” it said.

The province with the highest seven-day incidence was Vienna with 266.4, followed by Lower Austria, Salzburg and Burgenland (204.1, 177.5 and 145.5 respectively). This was followed by Vorarlberg (131.5), Upper Austria (129.9), Tyrol (124.7), Carinthia (110.9) and Styria (104.9).
