Ukrainian grain harvest probably reduced by 40 percent

The Grain Union of Ukraine, which unites producers and exporters, issued this assessment on Wednesday for the current 2022/2023 season. Accordingly, grain exports should also collapse by 50 percent.

Overall, the industry expects a harvest of 19.2 million tons of grain, in the previous season it was around 33 million tons. Nevertheless, despite blocked supply routes, occupied areas and mined fields, the country will be supplied with grain and will also be able to export some, the association continued. However, exports this season could be as little as 10 million tons, down from 20 million tons last season.

Ukraine and Russia are among the world’s most important grain producers. Exports from both countries have collapsed because of the fighting in Ukraine and Western sanctions against Russia. This increases the risk of undersupply and hunger worldwide.

Dozens of container ships are currently stranded in Ukrainian ports, which are being blocked by the Russian military. As a result, exports of wheat, sunflower oil, fertilizer and other goods cannot be processed as usual. Ship traffic in the Black Sea is also endangered by mines laid by both Russian and Ukrainian units.
