Strict measures in Lignano against alcohol excesses at Pentecost

Mayor Luca Fanotto decided that no drinks in glass bottles or cans may be sold over the weekend. Locals are only allowed to serve drinks in plastic or cardboard cups.

Drinking alcoholic beverages outside of premises is prohibited. The operators were also asked to reduce the music volume. Violations of the regulation are to be punished with administrative penalties of between 500 and 5,000 euros.

The sale of watermelons is also banned. In previous years, groups of youth had spent the Pentecost weekend listening to loud music, drinking alcohol and consuming watermelons, which had littered the town centre. The mayor wants to avoid similar incidents this year. Fountains and flower beds in the center were also cordoned off to prevent damage, local media reported.

In addition, the number of security forces who will patrol the city over the weekend will be increased. Especially at night, the controls on the beach are tightened. German-speaking police officers from Tramin in South Tyrol and from Carinthia should also be used.

Over 80,000 tourists are expected in Lignano on the Pentecost weekend, 20,000 of them from Austria. After two years of the pandemic, there are no restrictions in the popular Adriatic seaside resort. Heavy traffic on roads and motorways is therefore expected in Friuli.

The local motorway operator “Autovie Venete” advises Pentecost holidaymakers from Austria and Germany to “extreme caution” on the A23 (Udine-Palmanova) and A4 (Venice-Trieste) motorways. There was already heavy traffic on Thursday, a public holiday in Italy (Republic Day). Above-average traffic is also expected on the motorways in Friuli and Veneto in the next few days.
