travel permit will begin to be required from Argentines

And it is here when he appears on the scene European Travel Information and Authorization System, ETIASwhich has the power of border control around the Schengen area – a European area that includes 26 countries on the continent, different from the European Union, which have decided to abolish border controls between them – has created the program also called ETIAS, with the objective of improving the security of said area, both for residents and visitors.

For this reason, the European Council, when presenting this new system, assured in an official statement that “this new border and migration policy will increase security and help protect Europe from any possible future threat. ETIAS also seeks to control the mobility and migration of foreign visitors. It will enter into force in May 2023, as detailed in its article La Nación.

What is the proposed ETIAS system

The ETIAS system proposal suggests that initially there will be 60 eligible countries, including Argentina, to apply for the ETIAS permit online. This authorization is a permit for those traveling for business or tourism and is not a substitute for student or work visas. In this way, it will be a mandatory requirement for all those citizens who travel to Europe from Argentina. To process ETIAS it is not required to do a face-to-face procedure in any local office of the country of entry or destination, but the procedure will be carried out exclusively online, and is valid for up to 3 years, as long as the associated passport has not expired. The procedure includes those passengers in transit through the Schengen area since without an ETIAS authorization, they will not be able to transit on their connection trip.

At the moment, Argentine citizens traveling to Europe are exempt from applying for a Schengen visa to enter and stay for short stays of up to 90 days (within a total period of 180), but from the end of 2022 visitors to Argentina, including minors must obtain the aforementioned ETIAS visa, through the internet. There are 15 Latin American countries that are in the same situation: in addition to Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay and Panama. To start the process, applicants must have an Argentine passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the planned stay, provide an email address to receive the visa at the time it is approved, credit or debit card to pay the cost even not defined by the European Travel Information and Authorization System.

How to get the ETIAS permit

The ETIAS application will require the traveler to complete the form with their most important biographical data: the traveler’s full name, their date of birth and country of residence, their passport data. Once all the necessary fields have been completed, the applicant must answer a series of security and health-related questions.

Most ETIAS applications will be processed in a matter of minutes. All requests will be checked against security databases such as SIS, VIS, Europol Data and Interpol. Generally, the traveler will receive them during the first 3 business days after their request.

ETIAS is not transferable to another passport, so the document used for the application must be used to travel. This is an essential point to consider for those who have dual nationality.
