Police were alerted to the possible gun homicide in the early hours of the morning after family members found the retired couple dead and with serious gunshot wounds in their bedroom at around 5.45am. Relatives made the discovery after the couple failed to show up for breakfast as usual. Alarmed rescue workers could only determine the death of the two.

The Styrian State Criminal Police Office, Niklasdorf branch, took over the further investigations, crime scene officials and forensic doctors were already on duty to secure evidence. An apparently unregistered shotgun was found to be the murder weapon. However, the previously blameless 87-year-old also had a weapon-related document and had lawfully owned several hunting weapons, the police reported.

The public prosecutor’s office in Leoben ordered the autopsy of the two bodies in order to get information about the exact course of the crime, the evaluation of secured traces is still pending. According to the investigations so far, the 87-year-old may have received medical treatment several times in the past due to illness, which could also have been the motive for the crime. The severely affected relatives were cared for by a crisis intervention team.
