No to stricter speed limits

Instead of the speed limits of 50/100/130 km/h in urban areas, on open country roads and motorways, a proposal by the Tyrolean transport minister Ingrid Felipe from the Greens provides for 30/80/100 km/h. The proposed speed reduction can be found in an official statement by the Tyrolean state government on the amendment to the StVO, which Federal Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) had sent for assessment.

A speed reduction reduces air and noise pollution, saves fuel and thus reduces CO2 emissions, argues Felipe. The state councilor had claimed that her initiative had been “agreed upon” with her coalition partner. But the Tyrolean state VP spoke out against it yesterday: Drivers should not be “braked out across the board” “for ideological reasons”. Upper Austria’s Transport Provincial Councilor Günther Steinkellner (FP) also rejects the idea.

And even with Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler from the Greens, the idea of legally tightening the speed limits does not appeal. Instead, she relies on voluntariness, emphasizes the minister. Slower driving saves money and protects the climate, Gewessler emphasizes.

VP traffic spokesman Andreas Ottenschlager had previously spoken out against it: A speed reduction was “not part of the government program of the People’s Party and the Greens”.
