For the shootings, Joe Biden asked to ban the sale of assault weapons to individuals

“How many more killings are we willing to accept?” Biden asked in a televised address, saying that if a ban is not achieved, the age to buy such weapons should be raised from 18 to 21.

Biden called the refusal of most Republican senators to vote for tougher gun rules “inconceivable.”

It is “time for the Senate to do something,” the Democratic president said, adding that congressmen “cannot fail the American people again.”

He also asked to prevent schools from continuing to become “extermination fields, battlefields,” although he clarified that “it is not about taking away anyone’s weapons,” while the country was still shaken by the latest shootings that left dozens dead.

“Being there, in that small town, like so many other communities across America, I couldn’t help but think that there are too many other schools, too many other everyday places, that have become killing fields, battlefields,” he said.

The president thus referred to his recent visit to Uvalde, in the southern state of Texas, where last week an 18-year-old boy – who was later shot dead – shot 21 people to death in a school.

The United States has been going through a series of shootings and armed attacks for weeks with dozens of victims, which has revived the debate on the free carrying of weapons.

Legislators from the Democratic -in government- and Republican parties today sought to agree on some basic rules to impose some form of firearms control.

The Democrats have a narrow majority in Congress and to pass any legislation of the kind they need the support of a large part of the Republicans, who are usually reluctant to restrict the use of weapons.
