The first bike: seven tips for novice riders

Stable on the go: A children’s bike must be stable. So don’t just buy the cheapest bike. Brakes and gears shouldn’t be made of plastic, better made of aluminum or steel.

Well adjusted: For beginner cyclists, the saddle should be set so low that you can put both feet flat on the ground with your legs stretched out. This is important so that children do not fall over if they suddenly have to stop.

Being visible: At dusk or in gloomy weather, drivers can easily overlook young cyclists. That’s why reflectors on the bike – cat’s eyes, reflectors – are very important. Also good: light-colored clothing, jackets and backpacks with fluorescent strips.

In the street: Children under the age of twelve and without a bicycle license may only ride on the road with adults. To do this, however, they should be able to control their bike well, brake quickly and stay on track. The most important traffic sign: the red stop sign!

No frills: The very first bike should be as simple as possible. After all, it’s all about keeping your balance and being able to adjust your speed. For children under the age of eight, shifting gears is not necessary at all because shifting gears is too distracting.

Protector: If you have a BMX bike or a trials bike, you should wear knee and elbow pads. They don’t have to be with “normal” cycling. It is enough to drive carefully.

mind thing: Even if it’s only small rounds in the yard: Please always put on your helmet! Only that protects against head injuries if the child falls unfortunate. It is important that it is the right size. And that it sits correctly on the head: securely fastened to the top of the head, with the straps pulled tight around the chin.
